Beef Stocker USA 2013 Survey of the Animal Identification Industry

Responding Company: Cow Sense
Survey Section:
System Cost

The following question was posed to each company:

Your firm has just been contacted by three different producers interested in incorporating individualized animal identification using RFID in their beef cattle operation. The three different herd sizes are 50, 100, and greater than 250 head.

Please recommend EXACTLY what individual hardware (brands, models) and software components (and associated costs) each producer would need to purchase in order to employ your recommended complete RFID system.

Comments

This pricing scenario makes the following assumptions:

All three producers have an existing desktop computer with Windows XP or greater

The laptop recommended for the largest producer, is a fairly recent machine with the following minimum requirements:

  • Pentium Processor\
  • 256MB DDR2 SDRAM 1 Dimm
  • Windows XP or higher operating system
  • USB Port
  • Modem for internet communications and data transfer
  • 40 Gb hard disk, DVD/CD-RW,
  • (In harsh environments a ruggedized laptop maybe recommended – approximate cost $4-6,000)

The PDA Minimum requirements are:

  • Axim X50, Intel® 520MHz
  • 128MB ROM 64MB SDRAM
  • QVGA screen
  • 802.11b, Bluetooth\nUSB wireless
  • USB Cradle and charger
  • 1Yr Ltd. Warranty
  • Rhinoskin aluminum hard case
  • Stylus 3-pack
  • 1440 mAh LI spare battery
  • Auto power adapter

The Scale and weigh bars are not necessary to collect the RFID in this scenario, and have been included only to automate recording of the weight in Cow COMM.  This cost should not be included to determine a per head cost of EID.

All Hardware and Software costs should actually be amortized over at least a 3-5 year period. (4yr avg.)

The advantage to use of the software is not to collect the EID and data chute side  - although that is a benefit.  The true value of the Cow Sense suite of products is to aggregate the data in a relational database that can be used for making informed herd management decisions!
